The Nature and Growth of Faith

From mustard seed to mountain-moving power

Faith is not wishful thinking or blind optimism—it's confident trust in God's character and promises based on His revealed truth. Understanding faith correctly determines whether we approach God with confidence or uncertainty, whether we face challenges with courage or fear.

What Faith Is and Isn't

Faith IS:

  • Trust: Confident reliance on God's character
  • Evidence-based: Founded on God's proven faithfulness
  • Reasonable: Based on revealed truth
  • Active: Produces obedient action
  • Personal: Individual trust in God

Faith IS NOT:

  • Blind belief: Faith has a solid foundation
  • Positive thinking: More than mental attitude
  • Presumption: Demanding God act according to our desires
  • Feelings: Exists independent of emotions
  • Works: Faith and works are different

The Object of Faith

Faith is only as strong as its object. Christian faith rests in:

God's Character: His love, power, wisdom, faithfulness
God's Promises: What He has committed to do
God's Word: Revealed truth in Scripture
God's Son: Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord
God's Gospel: The good news of salvation

Levels of Faith

Scripture reveals different measures of faith:

  1. Saving Faith: Trust in Christ for salvation
  2. Living Faith: Daily dependence on God
  3. Little Faith: Weak trust in God's care (Matthew 6:30)
  4. Great Faith: Strong confidence in God's power (Matthew 8:10)
  5. Full Faith: Complete assurance in God's promises

How Faith Grows

"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17).

Faith grows through:

Scripture Study:** Learning God's character and promises
Prayer:** Experiencing God's faithfulness personally
Obedience:** Acting on what we believe
Testing:** Trials prove and strengthen faith
Testimony:** Hearing how God has been faithful to others

Faith in Action

True faith produces corresponding action:

  • Abraham: Left his country based on God's promise
  • Moses: Confronted Pharaoh trusting God's power
  • David: Faced Goliath with confidence in God
  • Daniel:** Remained faithful despite threats
  • Disciples:** Left everything to follow Jesus

"Faith without works is dead" (James 2:20) because living faith naturally produces obedient action.

Trials: Faith's Gymnasium

"Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory" (1 Peter 1:6-7).

Trials serve faith by:

  1. Revealing areas needing growth
  2. Forcing dependence on God
  3. Proving God's faithfulness
  4. Developing spiritual muscles
  5. Preparing for greater tests

Faith and Doubt

Even strong believers experience doubt. The key is how we handle it:

Honest doubt seeks answers and brings questions to God
Destructive doubt wallows in uncertainty and avoids seeking

When doubting:

  • Remember past evidences of God's faithfulness
  • Return to basics of Scripture and prayer
  • Seek godly counsel and community support
  • Act on what you do believe, not what you doubt
  • Give time for faith to be restored

Mustard Seed Faith

Jesus taught about faith's potential:

"If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you" (Matthew 17:20).

Small faith in a great God accomplishes great things.

Faith and Works Relationship

Faith and works are partners, not competitors:

Saved by faith alone: Works cannot earn salvation
Faith produces works: True faith naturally acts
Works demonstrate faith: Actions prove beliefs
Both honor God: Faith trusts; works obey

Building Faith Through Scripture

Different Bible passages strengthen different aspects of faith:

• **God's Promises:** For security and hope
• **God's Past Faithfulness:** For confidence in present troubles
• **Christ's Victory:** For assurance of ultimate triumph
• **Saints' Examples:** For encouragement in struggle
• **God's Character:** For trust in uncertain times

Faith's Ultimate Goal

Faith exists not for our comfort but for God's glory:

"That the trial of your faith...might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 1:7).

Mature faith:

  1. Trusts God's goodness in apparent evil
  2. Obeys God's commands despite cost
  3. Hopes in God's promises despite delays
  4. Loves God's glory above personal comfort
  5. Serves God's purposes beyond personal benefit

Reflection Questions

  1. In what specific areas do you need to exercise greater faith right now?
  2. How has your faith grown through past trials and challenges?
  3. What steps can you take to strengthen your faith this week?

Prayer

Lord, I believe; help my unbelief. Strengthen my faith through Your Word and Your faithfulness. Help me trust You completely, even when I cannot see the outcome. Give me courage to act on my faith and patience to wait on Your timing. When trials come, use them to build stronger faith. Make my faith a testimony to others of Your goodness and reliability. In Jesus' name, Amen.
