"Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding." - Proverbs 23:23 (KJV)
In a world where truth has become subjective and "your truth" is considered as valid as "my truth," God's Word stands as the unchanging standard. Truth is not a concept to be debated but a Person to be known—Jesus Christ, who declared, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). Holding to truth requires both courage and conviction in our relativistic age.
The Nature of God's Truth
Biblical truth possesses unique characteristics that set it apart from human opinions:
Absolute: "For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven" (Psalm 119:89). God's truth doesn't change with cultural trends or popular opinion.
Liberating: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). Rather than restricting us, truth sets us free from deception's bondage.
Sanctifying: "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth" (John 17:17). Truth transforms us, making us more like Christ.
Eternal: "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away" (Matthew 24:35). Long after current philosophies fade, God's truth endures.
Why Truth Matters
In our postmodern culture, many ask, "What is truth?" echoing Pilate's cynical question. Yet truth matters profoundly:
- For salvation: "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverbs 14:12)
- For guidance: "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105)
- For protection: "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust" (2 Peter 1:4)
- For worship: "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24)
- For witness: "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you" (1 Peter 3:15)
Challenges to Holding Truth
Standing for truth isn't easy in our current climate:
Cultural pressure: Society increasingly views absolute truth claims as intolerant or narrow-minded. "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil" (Isaiah 5:20).
Intellectual attacks: Academic circles often dismiss biblical truth as primitive or unscientific. "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools" (Romans 1:22).
Emotional appeals: "Follow your heart" has replaced "follow God's Word" as life's guiding principle. Yet "the heart is deceitful above all things" (Jeremiah 17:9).
Compromise temptations: The pressure to water down truth for acceptance is constant. But Jesus warned, "No man can serve two masters" (Matthew 6:24).
How to Hold Fast to Truth
1. Know the truth deeply. "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15). You can't hold what you don't know. Use tools like SpiriseBible to study Scripture systematically.
2. Love the truth passionately. "O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day" (Psalm 119:97). When we love truth, holding it becomes natural, not burdensome.
3. Live the truth consistently. "If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them" (John 13:17). Truth must move from our heads to our hearts to our hands.
4. Speak the truth lovingly. "But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things" (Ephesians 4:15). Truth without love repels; love without truth deceives.
5. Stand for truth courageously. "Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong" (1 Corinthians 16:13). Expect opposition but stand firm.
The Rewards of Truth-Holding
Those who hold fast to truth discover incredible blessings:
- Stability: "He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD" (Psalm 112:7)
- Direction: "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Proverbs 3:6)
- Peace: "Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them" (Psalm 119:165)
- Confidence: "In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence" (Proverbs 14:26)
- Legacy: "The memory of the just is blessed" (Proverbs 10:7)
Truth in Daily Life
Holding to truth affects every area of life:
In decisions: Ask not "What do I feel?" but "What does God's Word say?"
In relationships: Build on the foundation of truth, not convenience or emotion.
In trials: Stand on God's promises when circumstances suggest otherwise.
In temptation: Counter Satan's lies with Scripture, as Jesus did in the wilderness.
In witness: Share truth boldly but graciously, remembering you once walked in darkness too.
The Ultimate Test
Jesus said, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed" (John 8:31). The test of discipleship isn't just knowing truth but continuing in it—holding fast when it's unpopular, costly, or challenging.
Remember, we don't hold truth in our own strength. "Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy" (Jude 24). God who gave us His truth will help us hold it.
